The Brazilian railway giant CPTM signs an agreement with Goal Systems to implement its trip and shift planning technology.

The solution of Goal Systems will allow the optimised planning of the train assignment and the generation of the work schedule of the more than 1,140 train drivers of the company.

The Spanish company Goal Systems, world leader in planning optimisation software for the passenger transport sector, has become the new technological supplier of the Brazilian railway company Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM). Following an international tendering process, the company signed a contract to increase the efficiency of train journey planning and facilitate the management of its drivers’ timetables. These improvements mean greater efficiency in the operation while directly benefiting passengers.

The contract, which will run for 60 months, aims to provide the planning optimisation system, which will be available in SaaS (Software as a Service, in the cloud) mode. The system will optimise train planning, timetables and improve the allocation of more than 1,140 drivers to driving activities and other routine services more quickly and efficiently, reducing the time and effort involved in this task. In addition, the planning teams, who previously performed the work of charting and scheduling manually, will now be able to perform their activities more quickly with the automation of most of these functions.

With this agreement, CPTM will integrate the main operational planning activities into a single tool. It will now be possible, in a single solution, to prepare timetables containing the scheduling of trips and to assign the drivers who will carry them out. In addition, during the preparation of the timetable, it will be possible to add other driver activities, such as holidays, periodic examinations, among other requests.

The deadline for the implementation of the system in assisted operation is 9 months after the signing of the contract, as some parameters need to be customised and adjusted according to the reality of CPTM’s operation.

“Throughout its history, CPTM has been a pioneer in several advances in the railway sector, always innovating in the search for improvements for mobility in its area of operation. In order to maintain this history of continuous modernisation, focusing this time on its processes, the company decided to reach a new quality standard, implementing the Journey Planning and Timetable Management System. This technology facilitates operational management, as it allows the optimisation of human resources directly involved in the operation,” says Pedro Moro, president of CPTM.

According to Romano Garcia, commercial director for Latin America and general director for Brazil of Goal Systems, this partnership is already part of the company’s history in the country. “The contract with CPTM reaffirms our technical capacity and 30 years of experience in the market, with projects of different sizes and complexity, as well as our commitment to improve passenger transport and facilitate the processes for the companies in the sector”, emphasises the executive.

With 196 km of lines and 57 operational stations, CPTM currently serves 18 Brazilian cities and is the best alternative to reduce the mobility problem in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo and the saturation of public transport. The company is constantly promoting works to improve and modernise the railway system.
